Launch of the 2010 Green Long March

The 2010 Green Long March was launched at Beijing Forestry University on Saturday, April 3rd. Numerous representatives from the environmental and education sectors were greeted by an array of colorful performances and enthusiastic student volunteers representing 80 universities from across the country. Included among the honored guests was Hui Hanlie, Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Relations at Suzlon Energy, two-year Gold Level Sponsor of the Green Long March.

Students from more than 31 provinces participated in this year’s national training, as well as 20 representatives from environmental civil societies and NGOs across the nation, for a total of more than 120 participants. This year’s routes include the Snowlands and High Plateaus Route in Tibet, the Yellow River Route, the Yangtze River Route, the Grand Canal Route, the National Treasures Route in Sichuan, the Grasslands Route in Inner Mongolia, the Northeastern Forests Route and the Gold Coast Route, which will traverse Guangdong Province.

2010 Green Seed Award winners were also announced during this weekend’s Opening Ceremony. Awards ranging from 500 yuan to 10,000 yuan were presented to 16 deserving student groups to support field research projects and the promotion of sustainable development best practices in their communities. This year, an additional five grants were also awarded to students from the drought-stricken regions of southwestern China to research and promote sustainable development initiatives.
